| June 2008 | Race | London FOD Polish Job Fair - The Polish Express Job Fair has been one of the most important events for Poles in the UK during last few years. The fair had more than 5,000* visitors and over 50 top job recruiter and companies. This was a great opportunity for HSE to meet employers and workers to provide much needed H&S advice. Polish interpreters were also provided on the day to ensure that visitors were able to communicate with H&S advisors and inspectors. |

| July 2008 | Race | London –Attendance at Mela. Mela is a Sanskrit word meaning 'to meet', used to describe all sorts of community celebrations and festivals in the Asian subcontinent. A long-standing tradition in South Asia, the Mela strengthens communities by bringing people together in a festival atmosphere where everyone can enjoy food, music and dance. |

London RISE Festival – Launch of Sound Advice in partnership with RNID. FOD London launched the Sound Advice leaflet at this event. The event attracts over 100, 000 visitors. FOD worked with RNID to raise awareness of NOISE at work specifically in the entertainment industry. Over 700 people visited the joint HSE and RNID stands. |

| Sept 2008 | Race | Scotland Division (SD) is involved each year with Radio Ramadan. This radio station broadcasts during the month of Ramadan to Scotland's Muslim communities in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. SD fund prayer timetables that have HSE messages printed on and radio adverts are aired throughout the month. As a result of this HSE get free participation in the morning community programme. This normally consists of two inspectors taking part in a live scripted interview to discuss issues such as construction (refurbishment work) and gas safety. | This radio station is listened to by the majority of Scotland's Muslim population and gets key health and safety messages across to landlords and others that are hard to reach. |

| Feb 2009 | Race | The Luton Office and Luton Borough Council (LBC) Regeneration Department planned and delivered an event for major construction employers and developers/self employed tradesman from various ethnic backgrounds. Over 100 delegates attended. HSE has been included in the LBC organisation matrix which lists organisations that businesses can use for H&S assistance. The Inspector who took part in the event used his language skills to get key HSE messages across as he is fluent in Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi. | Reduction of accidents in the workplace in communities/sectors that are hard to reach. |

| Feb & March 2009 | Age, Disability and Gender | The Health and Social Care Services Unit facilitated the delivery of 18 Care Home Seminars across England and Scotland to help care home owners and managers to better manage risks due to e.g. manual handling, slips, trips and falls, and also accidents to service users from bedrails, falls and hot surfaces. | Feb 2009 | Race | Southern and Eastern TUC (SERTUC) Vulnerable workers business advice open day- A better deal for Polish Workers The aim of the event was is to introduce Polish workers to their rights at work. As well as information about how HSE can provide help and support. The majority of workers are non-unionised and have a low awareness of what services are available. This was an excellent opportunity for HSE and other providers to introduce themselves and provide materials to a large number of workers. At the event delegates were given the opportunity to take a H&S qualification conducted by the British Safety Council. |

| March 2009 | Race Gender | London HSE continues to work with Arachne Greek Cypriot Women's Group to provide health and safety awareness sessions to SMEs in this particular community. Arachne Greek Cypriot Women's Group is a long established voluntary organisation and registered charity that aims to improve the quality of life and well-being of Greek Cypriot and Greek women and their families. It does so by providing drop-in advice and information sessions, adult education classes, employment and training services, health project, play schemes, recreational and cultural activities. It also encourages women's active participation in determining policies that affect their lives. |

| April 2009 | Race | Construction Division London - HSE Construction Division has identified migrant workers as a particularly vulnerable group of construction employees, making up about 40% of the construction workforce in London. As a result, 3 outreach workers have been recruited and will establish better links with these groups, particularly those working on smaller sites where conditions are known to be more hazardous. The Outreach Workers will raise awareness of HSE’s role amongst the workers, employers, employment agencies, foreign language media and community organisations. | 2008 / 2009 | Race | ECOTEC Research Background As part of its external relations programme, FOD London has sought a number of different methods to engage with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and, in particular, black and minority ethnic (BME) groups. Contact with BMEs has largely been through festivals, where uptake of literature has been good, but the impact on H&S understanding cannot be ascertained. |

| 2008 / 2009 | Race | South West Division have carried out a series of joint inspections with LA Environmental Health Officers to assess the level of H&S provision for migrant and other workers during night time hours, particularly in relation to language difficulties, training and provision of work equipment. 49 premises employing more than 50 staff visited. Of the 46 reported on, 32 employed migrant workers and 14 employers recruited through agencies. No specific problems were raised regarding H&S; employers had generally taken the necessary measures to ensure safety. | Ensuring Health and Safety provisions are provided for by employers in industry employing large numbers of vulnerable workers. |
