Background information on Ill-Health Calculator
The Ill-Health Calculator is a simple tool to help you work out the costs
of employees who are off work because of a work-related illness. It allows you to
include the costs to your business for employees who permanently leave and have
to be replaced.
Only wage and replacement costs are included
in the direct costs. The level of indirect costs are estimated from general sickness absence data. There may be other direct
costs that you will also need to consider. For example, overtime payments, costs
of temporary staff etc. As these are not included, the Ill-Health Calculator may
underestimate the total costs.
It is also assumed that all costs fall within the same year. The total costs will
therefore be the annual cost.
If you want a more accurate cost of work-related ill-health for your organisation, you
will need to record your own costs. You may want to use the Incident
Cost Calculator included on this website to help you do this. If you

Instructions on using the Ill-Health Calculator
The Ill-Health Calculator will display a number of boxes on the screen. You
should enter the required values in the relevant one.
You will be asked to input the:
- total number of days that people are absent because of work-related ill-health; and
- the daily wage costs for an individual employee
If you do not know this information, the calculator has some average
values that you can use. You can view these by clicking on the
next to the item in question. You will need
to input how many individuals suffer ill-health for each category chosen. You can
input as many types of illness, or occupations as you wish, to calculate the
total number of days lost. Simply follow the instructions shown on the buttons.
You will also be asked to input the cost of replacing employees who
leave your organisation due to ill-health and are replaced. If you
do not know the costs for this, example values are also available.
After entering your information you will need to click on the continuation button. The
results will then be displayed.
If you wish you can print out the results for your records.
