Introduction
This website provides you with two different interactive tools to assist
you in identifying what accidents may be costing your organisation.
These two tools are the:
- annual accident calculator; and
- incident costs calculator.
The annual accident calculator allows you to simply estimate, using three
different methods, the potential uninsured costs of accidents to your organisation each
year. Adding to these the money you spend on insurance premiums, indicates the potential
total costs of accidents to your organisation each year.
The incident costs calculator is an interactive form that allows you to input
the actual (or best estimated) costs of an incident that has occurred in your organisation.
Using this you can track the real costs of an incident.
If you wish to go to the incident cost calculator now, please

This website also provides an interactive tool to allow you to estimate what work-related
ill health may be costing your organisation. If you wish to view this now, please

What will I get from the annual
accident calculator?
Three different methods are used to provide illustrative estimates of the annual
costs of accidents. These methods are based on:
- your annual insurance premiums;
- the number of employees you have; and
- the number of three different types of accidents you have had.
The last method (no 3) gives you two options to use:
- if you know how many accidents of the different types you have had, you can use
these; or
- if not, you can ask the software to use reference data based on the performance
of 'average' companies. You can choose which reference data to use to best match your
organisation.
The annual accidents calculator will use the information you provide to run these three
illustrative cost estimations. You can if you wish print out the results.

What will I not get from the annual
accident calculator?
Estimating what accidents may be costing your organisation is not an exact science.
What your actual costs might be depends on some organisational specific factors eg:
- the adequacy of your health and safety controls;
- the risks to which your employees are exposed;
- staff costs in your organisation; and
- the value of the products or services you generate.
Because of these, only illustrative costs can be provided to you. These are based on
'average accident costs' and 'average accidents rates'. As averages are used, the actual
costs in your organisation may be different from those presented.
You can see if your organisation has a better or worse accident record than the
national average (for an organisation of your type) by comparing the predicted number of
'over 3 day' reportable accidents with your own records. This will indicate whether your
costs are likely to be higher or lower than those indicated.
If you want more accurate information on accident costs in your organisation, you will
need to undertake your own costings study. If you want to know how to do this, then please
click here.
Further information on how the annual accident calculator works is given in the reference
section of the website.

Do I need to do anything before I can run
the annual accident calculator?
You will be asked to provide:
- the amount of money you pay annually on insurance eg against injury, ill-health
and damage;
- the number of employees in your organisation;
- your annual turnover (optional); and
- your gross profit margin (optional).
Whilst you do not need the exact figures, the more accurate your data, the better the
cost estimates will be.
You will be prompted to enter your information. Depending on how you answer the prompts,
you may be asked for some further information.
