The proposal to amend the Asbestos
(Prohibition) Regulations (1992)
Consultation ended 28 February 2003
Summary
This document sets out the Health and Safety Commission's
(HSC's) proposals to amend the Asbestos (Prohibition)
Regulations 1992 (as amended in 1999).
At present the importation of crude, fibre, flake, powder or
waste asbestos and any product containing asbestos is prohibited
by the 1999 amendment to the Asbestos (Prohibition) Regulations.
This differs from the prohibition on the supply and use of
asbestos products as this only applies to those products to which
asbestos has been intentionally added.
These amendments propose that the import prohibition be
amended to apply to crude, fibre, flake, powder and waste
asbestos and to any product to which asbestos has been
intentionally added. This would make the prohibition on imports
the same as that for supply and use.
