Falls and trips in construction – real examples of good and bad practice

These photographs were taken on the same small domestic refurbishment job. The ‘Before’ shots are the conditions our Inspector found when he first visited the site (un-announced!). Enforcement notices were issued. The ‘After’ shots are the same site when our Inspector came back at a later date to check on compliance with the notices.

Conditions throughout were so poor that the toilet facilities for the workers were a hole in the ground behind the screen to the left hand side on the ‘Before’ shot above! As you can see in the ‘After’ shot, a temporary portaloo was provided following our visit.

All it would have taken was some forward planning to keep walkways and work areas clear of materials and waste, and some tidying up as they went along.
