Clients and designers can play a major part in eliminating the risks of HAVS, eg by specifying prefabricated components and work processes that avoid the need to use vibrating tools.

Alternative work methods

• Look for alternative work methods that eliminate or reduce exposure to vibration. Your trade association, industry contacts, equipment suppliers and trade journals may help you to identify good practice in your part of the industry.
• Mechanise or automate the work.

Example: If you usually use a hand-held breaker, use an excavator-mounted pecker instead.
