Achieving behavioural change

Achieving behavioural change is vital to preventing accidents and for helping you and your workforce improve standards and work smarter on site. It need not cost much to do. The lessons learnt by the Department of Work and Pensions through their ‘ABC Course’ will benefit everybody.

Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Jobcentre Plus project

DWP’s Jobcentre Plus (JCP) project was one of the largest government construction programmes undertaken in the UK, in recent years. This project aimed to rollout refurbishment of over 900 job centres nationwide.

Central to the success of the Jobcentre Plus project was the Achieve Behavioural Change (ABC) Training Course.  All workers, supervisors and managers on the project attended the one day course. On passing the course a card was issued which provided a “passport” to work on the project. The course aimed to change attitudes and foster good behaviours. The central theme of the course is 'Health and safety is every bodies responsibility on site’.

HSE is pleased, with the full co-operation of DWP JCP to make the substantive content of the ABC course available, for use by the construction industry.  Small and large construction firms can learn from the DWP JCP experience.
