The maximum of the pay range for this post is currently £77,499 Successful applicants will be offered a point on the salary scale, appropriate to the level of their experience and skills within the range £67,213 - £71,915. Aberdeen posts will receive an additional Aberdeen Allowance of £13,000 p.a. The role includes travel offshore for which there are additional allowances. |

Background
The post holder will be a member of the Offshore Division's Marine Engineering and Naval Architecture team. You will be responsible for inspection, assessment, investigation and enforcement of marine issues on UK offshore installations. Your technical advice will provide a sound basis for employers to set and maintain their own appropriate safety standards.
About the role
- Provide expert advice on health and safety matters associated with the specialist topic of marine engineering or naval architecture within HSE, and to industry and other stakeholders.
- Carry out inspections with respect to specialist issues as part of the Directorate's work plan.
- Assess safety cases, drawing conclusions as to the adequacy of the case itself, and make recommendations for future inspection topics.
- Investigate accidents, incidents and complaints as part of a team or alone.
- Provide support and instigate enforcement action, including the preparation of technical reports, and provision of expert evidence in legal proceedings.
- Make technical and strategic contributions to HSE's overall strategy.
- Make technical contributions to the development of industry standards and guidance.
- Initiate research focused on resolving hazards in the offshore work environment.
Person requirements
- A degree or equivalent qualification (e.g. Master Mariner) in a relevant discipline.
- A chartered engineer and corporate membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g. IMarEST, RINA, or Nautical Institute).
- Experience of design, construction, integrity management, and marine operations of floating offshore installations, support vessels, and their marine plant and equipment.
- Knowledge and understanding of all major accident hazards and their control measures for floating offshore installations. In particular: mooring and dynamic positioning systems; FPSO cargo and offloading systems; seakeeping and stability analysis; marine and structural integrity; stability and ballast systems; marine safety and emergency response systems.
- Familiarity with relevant offshore standards, including those of the International Maritime Organisation; International Standards Organisation; and Classification Societies.
- Practical experience with risk assessment and risk management tools.
- Ability to work with other technical disciplines at all levels.
- Skill to influence change at more senior management levels.
- You must be able to satisfy the UK offshore medical & survival training requirements.
- You will hold a full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK unless reasonable adjustments can be made in line with the Equality Act 2010
