The post

The Explosion Safety Unit at HSL is involved in a wide range of activities relating to explosion hazards from explosives and explosive atmospheres, including a number of national and international collaborations and activities. The Unit is now recruiting to further add to its internationally recognised expertise in the areas of commercial explosives and energetic materials. The successful candidate for this particular post will be a key member of the team developing and delivering experimental work for HSE and commercial customers on HSL's range facilities, and in addition, there will be some involvement in smaller-scale laboratory based work, incident investigations and consultancy work.    

Your role

• To play a key role in winning, planning and delivering HSL’s large scale outdoors activities.
• Investigation of incidents involving explosives to achieve a successful conclusion under tight deadlines.
• To participate in the work of relevant committees (as an expert on behalf of HSE).
• To maintain and develop key business contacts.
• To write reports and papers for external publication.
• To contribute to the achievement of safe working conditions and the effective use of resources.

Person requirements

• A degree, or equivalent relevant experience, with membership of Institute of Explosives Engineers.
• Extensive experience of using/handling/working with explosives.
• Experience of organising and delivering large scale outdoor trials.
• Ability to analyse and solve practical problems.
• Experience of Project Management and carrying out risk assessments for experimental work/testing.
• You will also be a team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
