Salary The maximum of the pay range is £46,937. Successful applicants will be offered a point on the salary scale appropriate to their level of their experience and skills within the range £37,303 to £41,243.

Background

As a Specialist Inspector in the Explosives Inspectorate, you will be part of a team responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation at a range of sites including those licensed by HSE for the manufacture, storage and handling of explosives. You will also provide specialist advice both within HSE and to HSE's external stakeholders including other government departments.

About the role

  • To ensure compliance with health and safety legislation (including specific major hazards and explosives legislation) you will carry out inspections and audits of companies involved in the manufacture and large scale storage and transportation of explosives and other energetic materials, offering advice on meeting statutory legal requirements, and initiating enforcement action where necessary.
  • You will assess these organisations as part of the licensing process and help approve explosives classifications. Additional areas of your remit will include the assessment of safety reports required under major hazards legislation, and the investigation of incidents
  • You will work with the explosives industry to develop guidance and advice on compliance with legislation applying to explosives, and provide advice on explosives safety matters to other government departments, local authorities and the police

Person requirements

Either

  • An honours degree in a science, engineering or related subject area and experience in the field of explosives or other energetic materials

Or

  • Equivalent competence and knowledge to the above gained through relevant extensive experience in the field of explosives

And experience of either the

  • Manufacture, storage or handling of explosives

Or

  • Storage, handling and processing of energetic or reactive materials

Or

  • Application of process hazard identification and risk assessment and analysis techniques to explosives, energetic or reactive materials

Or

  • Application of international schemes for the classification and transport of explosives
