Salary The maximum of the pay range for this post is currently £50,707. Successful applicants will be offered a point on the salary scale, appropriate to the level of their experience and skills, within the range £42,323 - £46,040.

Background

You will work as a mechanical engineer as part of a team responsible for the inspection of major hazard installations, providing expertise in the field of mechanical engineering and pressure systems integrity. Your technical advice should provide a sound basis for employers to set and maintain their own appropriate safety standards.

About the role

  • Carry out inspections on mechanical engineering issues as part of the Division's work plan
  • Investigate accidents and incidents
  • Provide support for enforcement action, including the preparation of technical reports and provision of expert evidence in legal proceedings
  • Provide expert advice on safety matters associated with your specialist topic as part of a team, assessing Safety Reports and verifying compliance with the Control of Major Accidents Hazard Regulations and the HSW Act
  • Contribute to the development of the Directorate technical and operational strategy
  • Represent HSE at meetings with fellow occupational professionals, industry, HSE operational and policy staff, including speaking and making presentations at conferences

Person requirements

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
  • Corporate membership of a relevant professional institution or the qualifications and experience to apply for membership and registration
  • A good working knowledge of the application of your discipline skill to the chemical industry sector
  • Mechanical Engineering principles e.g. mechanical integrity, safe design and use, risk assessment
  • Vessels, pipe work and other containment e.g. pressure vessels and systems and hazardous substances storage
  • Maintenance e.g. maintenance strategies, safe isolation, working in confined spaces, Permit to Work systems
  • Inspection and testing e.g. plant and equipment where inspection and testing is key to avoiding failure. Test and inspection techniques, defect assessment methods
  • Mechanical failure - includes mechanisms of mechanical failure, degradation of materials and life extension
  • A full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK is required unless reasonable adjustments can be made under the Equality Act 2010
