Rotherham and Hull inspection campaigns

Businesses in Rotherham and Hull to be the focus of concentrated health and safety inspections.

Statistics show that work related injury figures for the Rotherham and Hull areas rate in the highest 25% of all local authorities in Great Britain. As a result, the Health and Safety Executive, together with local authorities in Hull, Rotherham and the East Riding of Yorkshire, are to launch a targeted inspection campaign to improve health and safety standards in these areas.

What is the aim of the campaign?

The campaign aims to raise awareness of health and safety issues and reduce the impact of workplace accidents and ill health on individuals and businesses.

When will the campaign take place?

Two week-long periods of concentrated inspections, performed in conjunction with the local authorities, will take place in Hull: 29 September - 3 October 08; and Rotherham: 2-6 March 09.

What will happen if issues are identified?

Inspectors and visiting staff will provide advice and information wherever possible. Where employers are found not to be complying with the law then appropriate action will be taken. This may involve the service of Improvement and/or Prohibition Notices, or in some cases where serious breaches are identified, action through the courts.

What is a flexible warrant? (Hull campaign only)

During the campaign, inspectors covering the Hull area will be issued with a flexible warrant which allows them to inspect all workplaces regardless of the nature of work being undertaken.
