Backs to basics – free health and safety event
19 February, The Pavilions of Harrogate at The Great Yorkshire Showground
Harrogate Local Authority has teamed up with the HSE to present a free seminar to local businesses as part of the Better Backs Campaign. This is a national campaign to tackle back pain and upper limb disorders (ULDs) at work. As you may be aware this remains the most common form of ill health at work
The main aim is to promote the use of lifting and handling aids as a means of reducing the incidence of back injuries at work. However accepting back injuries can arise from both work and non-work activities, the initiative will also seek to promote a sensible wide-ranging approach, encouraging engagement from all sides of business and industry, more especially employers and employees. We have extended the scope of our previous campaigns to include ULDs and musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).
The Food and manufacturing industries are of particular concern to HSE as 60% of injuries are caused by lifting and 35% manual handling. Repetitive tasks and awkward movements can cause ULDs resulting in prolonged pain and absence from work.
