Monitoring and improving
You need to review your health and safety policy and risk assessments regularly and make sure that all your employees understand their roles and responsibilities.
A regular programme of performance review will help you improve health and safety in your business.
First, you might like to go back over Getting started – step-by-step and make sure all the documents you produced are up to date and relevant.
Your employees have a big part to play in improving health and safety – our Worker involvement website shows you how.
SME Performance Indicator
For businesses with fewer than 250 employees, we have developed the SME Performance Indicator with Business Link and the British Insurance Brokers' Association. This self assessment tool:
- helps you to understand how well you identify and manage health and safety hazards
- provides you with targeted guidance to help you improve your management of health and safety
- enables you to compare your performance anonymously with other businesses across sectors and sizes
Corporate Health and Safety Performance Indicator
For larger businesses, we have developed the Corporate Health and Safety Performance Indicator (CHaSPI), which:
- allows a company to assess its performance on health and safety using a recognised set of indicators. The results can be used to benchmark performance within or across sectors, as well as enabling performance to be tracked over time
- allows the business to clearly and concisely communicate its occupational health and safety performance to external stakeholders who are concerned about risk, particularly those from the financial sector such as investors and insurers.
