Managing health
Implementing health and safety measures doesn't have to be expensive, time consuming or complicated. In fact, safer and more efficient working practices can save money and greatly improve working conditions for your employees.
If you have five or more employees you will need to write down your health and safety policy. This sets out how you manage health and safety in your organisation. It needn't be overly complicated, but should be something that is meaningful and useful to you and your staff.
It isn't difficult to keep your employees safe and healthy in the workplace. This will keep your profits where they belong: as profits for your company, not money paid out to cover avoidable staff absences due to ill health or injury.
When trying to establish the common causes of accidents and ill health at work, consider the following questions. They may help clarify the issues.
- What are the chances of people slipping or tripping at work?
- Do people work with, or come into contact with, asbestos?
- Do people work with hazardous substances?
- Do people perform work at height and, if so, is it done safely?
- Do people suffer from sprains, strains and pains?
- Do people use computers or other display screen equipment?
- Is your workplace noisy?
- Are employees exposed to vibration?
- How safe is electricity in your workplace?
- Do people know how to select and use your work equipment?
- What maintenance and building work takes place?
- What are the risks from transport in your workplace?
- Do you know the risks associated with pressure systems?
- Do you know how to prevent fire or explosion?
- Do you know where harmful radiation occurs?
- Are employees feeling stressed by work?
- What do you do if there's an accident at work?
