Rehabilitation for injured staff

BPI already carries out manual handling risk assessment and kinetic handling training to reduce musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) injury levels. BPI wanted to find ways to support those staff who did suffer MSD injuries.

What did the company do?

By working with 'Osteopaths for Industry', BPI provides:

  • Employee access to expert support - injured staff have access to 3,000 osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists
  • Prompt treatment of injuries - every injured person is seen by a therapist within 24-48 hours
  • Management of absences assisted by experts - with the injured person's consent the physical therapist sends BPI a detailed report to aid BPI in assisting the injured person back to work
  • A people-centred service - the scheme doesn't discriminate between injuries from work or leisure activities

Business benefits

  • Over 80% reduction in the average number of working days lost due to MSDs
  • Only 16% of referrals to physio therapists had to take time off work
  • 70% of employees referred are fit for work, and 14% are put on restricted duties
  • A significant reduction in civil compensation claims

  • A significant reduction in the length of time employees stay off work after they've been injured - from an average of 26 days absence to 4 days

The cost benefits

In 2001, the initiative cost around £16,000. This was the cost of around 400 treatments (with an average of 3 treatments per referral).

Savings of £12 for every £1 spent

For every £1 spent on the initiative, BPI believes they have benefited from savings of £12. So, as basic costs in 2001 were £16,000, benefits of £192,000 were achieved. This was a saving of £176,000 in one year and has continued to return such large savings each year since.

A Director's view

The Board were enthusiastic that a new means of supporting staff and reducing business losses had been identified. They gave their full support to the Group Health and Safety Manager to develop and trial the scheme.
