A joint industry, trades union and HSE forum called The Asbestos Liaison Group (ALG) meets quarterly to agree industry standards and to set the strategic direction of the industry. The Group produces memos that provide pragmatic guidance for licence-holders. Organisations represented include regulators, trade associations and employee organisations.
All asbestos workers should be trained and competent. There are three main types of asbestos training: licensed, non-licensed and asbestos awareness training. Training should be delivered in accordance with the Approved Code of Practice L143, 'Work with asbestos containing materials' and, for licensed work, Chapter 4 of HSG 247, 'Asbestos: the licensed contractors' guide'. Training providers should also be able to demonstrate compliance with these standards.
