Forestry update

After a successful first series of Safety and Health Awareness Days (SHADs) for the forestry industry in June this year at Kielder, Aberfoyle and Knighton, three further events are planned at similar locations later in the year aimed at contractors and machine operators working on forestry sites. These events are completely free, enjoyable and run by people with years of experience working in the forest. The events are held in the forest and are designed to be as practical and realistic as possible. Those who come along also get fed! Anyone interested in attending the events should contact Jason Liggins (Jason.liggins@hse.gsi.gov.uk)

The Aboriculture and Forestry Advisory Group (AFAG), the forum at which those involved in the UK forestry industry come together with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to respond to current health and safety issues, will also be exhibiting at this years APF International Forestry Machinery Exhibition at Ragley Estate between the 21st and 23rd of September. Members of AFAG and HSE will be available to answer questions and discuss issues throughout the event.

AFAG will also be in the seminar tent at 10am on Friday 22nd of September where members of AFAG will be explaining what we do, who’s involved in making these decisions and how you can get your voice heard. The new AFAG guidance on Steep Ground Working and Controlling the Risks From Whole Body Vibration in Forestry will be launched at the Seminar and members will describe our current work and explain how we are addressing the issues that matter to the industry. After a series of short presentations, AFAG Members will be available to answer any questions and listen to any issues that concern you. If you can’t make the seminar, please come along to the AFAG stand anytime throughout the event where members will also be available to discuss issues relating to our work and to health and safety in forestry in general. Get involved! Come along and make your views heard! For further information please contact Jason Liggins (Jason.liggins@hse.gsi.gov.uk).
