Farmers urged to wear protective clothing when treating sheep

Farmers and workers who treat livestock, particularly sheep, are urged to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) when using the products.

The findings of a recent survey conducted by the National Farmers Union Scotland suggested that PPE including protective boots, gloves and coveralls are not always worn when applying "pour-on" products used to control sheep ectoparasites such as blow flies, ticks and lice. A proportion of farmers and workers also reported that they had suffered ill health as a consequence of exposure to these veterinary medicines.

Handling and applying these treatments without appropriate PPE may expose operators to the risk of sustaining an adverse reaction to the product. The symptoms and extent of ill health usually depends on the product used and nature of the exposure. Veterinary products are no different from other chemicals used around the farm. They should be treated with respect and precautions taken to protect the health of those who use them or are likely to come into contact with them.

Precautions to reduce the risk should always include the wearing of appropriate PPE as set out in the "operator warnings" section of the product data sheet or in the summary of product characteristics supplied with the veterinary medicine - usually this is found on a leaflet, label or packaging supplied with the product.

It is important to remember that PPE may also be required when handling stock afterwards, not just at the time of treating the animals. If you do become unwell after using these products, follow the advice given by the manufacturer and seek medical attention.
