Less than 1.5 per cent of the working population of Great Britain is employed in agriculture but the sector is responsible for between 15 per cent and 20 per cent of fatalities to workers each year. In 2007/08, 39 workers died bringing the ten-year total death toll to 455. The key causes of farm deaths have remained unchanged in that time, notably workplace transport, falls from height, being struck by moving or falling objects (including machinery), and livestock.  The fatal accident incidence rate indicates that the industry continues to be one of the poorest performers of any major industrial sector.  Lack of basic training or competency are often contributory factors.

Who should attend the seminar?

This event is ideal for farming and horticultural businesses employing staff on a permanent or temporary basis.  Farmers, partners, managers and directors of large companies and agri-businesses are particularly welcome.

This event will:

• provide you with an opportunity to learn more about the HSE initiative to improve competencies and skills;
• introduce a suite of health and safety vocational qualifications that are specific to the needs of the industry;
• explain how to go about getting staff trained and qualified;
• provide an outline of the legal duties placed on directors;
