Offshore helicopter safety has been in the spotlight after two ditching incidents in 2012. As a result, many offshore workers understandably had questions – not just about these incidents – but about helicopter safety more generally.
The Helicopter Safety Awareness Courses are run by Step Change in Safety and provide an opportunity for offshore personnel, including safety representatives, to find out more about flight operations. The full-day courses are usually hosted by one of the three Aberdeen-based helicopter operators, with presentations given by both pilots and technicians. The courses give an insight into helicopter operators’ legal obligations, maintenance regimes and flight planning and also include a hangar visit.
Always fully booked feedback from the attendees positively highlight the opportunity to speak openly to pilots and technicians and ask any questions they or their colleagues offshore might have. Recent Helicopter Safety Awareness Courses have also included the opportunity to sit in a helicopter simulator.
