Agriculture Industry Advisory Committee (AIAC)

Introduction
The HSE Board initiated a review of the framework for bodies under its governance, including the Advisory Committees, in April 2008 and will consider detailed proposals in the autumn of 2009.
In the meantime, the Agriculture Industry Advisory Committee will continue to operate under the Terms of Reference agreed in April 2005 amended as necessary to reflect the changes required by:
- The Board’s new strategy “The Health and safety of Great Britain\\ Be part of the solution” launched in June 2009; and
- The Board’s Agriculture Revisited Initiative agreed in May 2008.
Terms of reference
The Committee will:
- Bring its knowledge, experience and influence in the industry to bear to identify future trends in the land based sector;
- In partnership with HSE, develop a plan of work in support of the new HSE Strategy and Agriculture Revisited to promote a reduction in the number of deaths in the farming industry in the longer term and prompt changes in behaviour and culture;
- Act as a catalyst for change to complement, support and deliver the strategy and Agriculture Revisited within the land based sector through its plan of work and the work of its project/working groups;
- Encourage the organisations they represent and the wider rural community to adopt, promote and support policies and initiatives agreed by the Committee;
- Disseminate advice and best practice throughout the rural community; and
- Translate and disseminate the Board’s priorities to its constituencies to:
- Reduce the number of fatalities, major injuries and days lost caused by injuries and work related ill health in agriculture;
- Contribute to delivering HSE’s Strategy and Agriculture Revisited
- Promote a culture change resulting in an agriculture industry, which recognises and accepts that high standards of health and safety are an integral part of successful business practice;
- Promote better understanding and recognition of the risks to health and safety of farmers and farm workers
- Share information on new strategies and approaches for reducing the risks: and
- Build partnerships and commitment for future work.
