HSE's role in making it happen

The coalition government has made a commitment "to ensure a safe and successful Games and... to deliver a genuine and lasting legacy". HSE has worked closely with dutyholders on the London 2012 project, which has an exemplary safety record to date, and is part of a team working to carry through this high performance right through to the Games.

From the start of the construction phase, HSE adopted a strategy of early intervention with the client to ensure they identified key risks and control measures. HSE worked alongside the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) to ensure that designers and principal contractors had robust risk management systems in place. One key objective was to encourage strong leadership and the sharing of good practice throughout the 'big build' phase of the project. HSE has targeted high-risk activities and, when necessary, has taken enforcement action.

As preparations continue, HSE and local authority co-regulators are working with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). This will ensure a proportionate and consistent approach to the regulation of Games-related activities in London and around the UK.
