Kevin Allars

Kevin is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, and first worked on bus maintenance, sub-ocean welding, and 11 years at BNFL’s Magnox nuclear power station in Scotland.

He left BNFL in 1989 to join HSE’s Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, working in assessment, safety research policy, and as Site Inspector firstly on nuclear power stations and latterly the Dounreay Site, before a secondment into Safety Policy. 

In 2000 Kevin was promoted to Senior Civil Service, responsible for developing policy and legislative reform on nuclear and onshore major-hazard sites. He also coordinated HSE’s input to the Government’s response to the 11.9.01 terrorist event.

From 2003 until early 2008 Kevin headed up HSE’s Chemical Industries Division, responsible for inspection, assessment and enforcement of all on-shore Major Chemical Facilities (managing 240 staff nationwide).

In 2008 Kevin moved to Nuclear Directorate, as Deputy Chief Inspector, responsible for inspection, assessment and enforcement at the UK’s nuclear fuel cycle sites (inc Sellafield) and the UK’s nuclear research sites (inc Dounreay), as well as managing the UK’s operational safeguards activities. In February 2009 he was asked, on temporary promotion to SCS Grade 2, to undertake the role of Director, New Nuclear Build Generic Design Assessment (GDA), with particular responsibility for delivering, to time (June 2011) and quality, the GDA for the two new build reactors designs that requesting parties propose to build in the UK.

Kevin has been local and regional Round Table Chairman, and had a year on the National Executive. He’s involved in charity work: organising wishes for terminally ill children. His hobbies include Banger (stock car) racing, football, motor sport, bowls, and live music. He has a son of 28 working for IBM; and a daughter of 26 who has added Emma and Jack to the family dynasty, so at 51 Kevin is now a grandad!
