Mr Spanswick has a key role helping to integrate and promote the construction industry's participation in the development and delivery of the Health and Safety Executive's strategy and programmes.
He took up his post on May 1, 2006. His application to the HSE was sponsored by The Major Contractors Group.
On his appointment Mr Spanswick said: "I hope I will be able to give further support to the existing strong efforts of the HSE particularly in the areas outlined in their strategy. This document identifies a number of key goals if we are to improve health and safety in the British workplace for the benefit of all, and I believe these are achievable".
Mr Spanswick trained with Bovis after joining them straight from school and has worked for them for over 40 years. He has progressed through various management positions to become Chief Executive of Bovis Lend Lease's UK and European business in 2000. In 2005 he became BLL Group Chairman.
He is past Chairman of the Major Contractors Group and the Strategic Forum Health and Safety Group. He is a Councillor on the London Region of the CBI.
John is married with two children and one grandchild. He is a keen sports supporter particularly soccer and rugby and is a committed golfer.
