Dr Sayeed KhanSayeed did a short spell as a machinist in a small engineering works in South Wales before going to medical school. He worked as a GP before specialising in occupational medicine and is now a Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP), the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) and of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM). He has an interest in the gathering and analysis of occupational health data and has been awarded a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nottingham for a thesis on this subject.

Sayeed is actively involved in a number of committees including the British Occupational Health Research Foundation Scientific committee, the RCP/FOM Occupational Health Clinical Effectiveness Unit Steering Group; he is on the National Stakeholders Councils for Workplace Health Connect and for the Health, Work and Well-being strategy. He is also a member of the NICE programme development group looking at guidance on long term sickness absence and incapacity. He has worked closely with the RCGP in developing and piloting a national education programme for GPs on health and work.

Sayeed is the Chief Medical Adviser of EEF, the manufacturers' organisation.  As well as being a member of the HSE Board, Sayeed’s other appointments include being the first Special Professor in Occupational Health at the University of Nottingham and the occupational physician for an ice cream factory.

Sayeed is not engaged in any political activity nor does he hold any other public appointments.

His appointment commenced 1 April 2005.
