Our job is to protect everyone in Great Britain against risks to health or safety arising out of work activities; to conduct and sponsor research; promote training; provide an information and advisory service; and submit proposals for new or revised regulations and approved codes of practice.
From 1 April 2008 HSE became the single national regulatory body responsible for promoting the cause of better health and safety at work.
The aim is to develop a new 'About Us' website for HSE. The pre-April HSC and HSE websites are still available for now.
We also have a specific duty to maintain the Employment Medical Advisory Service, which provides advice on occupational health matters.
This is achieved with the help of people from a wide variety of backgrounds, interests and experience - brought together through a network of advisory committees. We actively encourage feedback from the public - and make special efforts to seek the views of small firms.
I hope this site helps to explain the Commission's role, the people involved and our future priorities.
Judith Hackitt CBE - Chair of the Health and Safety Commission.
