This area of the site contains information to help parents, teachers and the public understand adventure activities licensing.

Concerns about difficulties in identifying safety standards at adventure activity centres or those of individual providers resulted in compulsory inspection and licensing for activity centres providing adventure activities to young people of 17 years old and under.

The Licensing Scheme came into force on 16 April 1996 and all those who provide adventure activities that come within scope of the Licensing Regulations 2004 must be licensed.
