Issue: L77, the Guidance from the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority on the Adventure Activities Licensing Regulations 2004 indicates that the AALA will accept qualifications not specifically mentioned in L77 if they are of a similar standard to an NGB award. This IGN indicates some awards currently accepted as equivalent.
There is an equivalent award covering the same topics and targeted at the same client group.
Example: Irish Canoe Union Instructor Award is multidisciplinary and multi-craft and can therefore is considered as satisfying the criteria for BCU L3 Coach, Kayak and Canoe, Inland and Sea. Additionally there should be evidence of currency in the individual elements, with particular attention to L3 Sea-type work.
There is an award covering the same topics but is intended for a different client group.
Example: Joint Services Mountain Expedition Leader (JSMEL) is considered as covering the same technical components as the Mountain Leader Award. The target group will however generally be military personnel with an expectation of good military discipline. Additionally there should be evidence of work and/or induction and/or training with any substantially different client group, e.g. challenged or challenging young people.
