Man overboard during a high-speed turn in a RIB

March 2009

Issue

Two candidates on a RYA level two powerboat course were thrown from the boat and one seriously injured during a high-speed manoeuvre.

Outcome

The RYA conducted a full inquiry into this incident and the report is available from them. This serves as a reminder that manoeuvres afloat, especially at speed, should always be undertaken with appropriate regard for the safety of any passengers and crew. It would also be sensible for providers using open powerboats to review the suitability of seating and hand hold provision on their vessels.
