Eliminate fettling by improving casting quality

The problem: Foundry production of cast pipe components using the "traditional" green sand casting method resulted in a product which required a substantial amount of remedial working, using hand-held grinders, to produce the necessary quality of finish. The holes in the pipe flanges had then to be drilled in a separate operation.

The solution: Production of these components was changed to the more modern lost foam casting process.

The result: The new process has resulted in such a high quality of casting that no fettling is required, thus eliminating all hazardous vibration exposure. In addition, the precision of this casting process allows the holes to be cast into the flanges, eliminating the drilling procedure and further reducing time and cost.
