Slips and Trips eLearning Package (STEP) - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are there any copyright restrictions with the STEP tool?

You are not allowed to amend STEP in any way. When using STEP or any of its associated material it must always be attributed to the Health and Safety Executive.  This is because the material in STEP is owned by the Crown and is therefore subject to the rules of Crown copyright. However it can be used on closed intranet systems for staff training (see also see No 7).

2. Can I reproduce the HSE STEP Introductory Level Quiz Questions on our company’s E learning Site?  This will allow us to record who has undertaken the STEP Introductory module.

Yes you can as long as the questions and answers are not changed or taken out of context. You must also use them in conjunction with the STEP tool and attribute the tool to the Health and Safety Executive.

3. I’ve heard there are certificates on ‘STEP’ that can be issued to users once learning is completed. Where can I find them?

Yes certificates are available for all levels of learning helping people to keep a personal record of their achievement.

Both the Intermediate and Introductory course certificates can be found by clicking on any of the Intermediate course levels and then on the ‘Resources’ tab on the blue bar on the top of the page.

You can find all three Certificates on any of the ‘Advanced’ levels. Click on the   ‘Resources’ tab on the blue bar at the top of the screen.

You will need Microsoft Word to open these certificates.

4. Does STEP contain everything I need to know about slip and trip risks and will it solve all my slip and trip issues?

This package provides practical guidance and learning that will, if put into practice, help you successfully tackle slips and trips in your workplace. However, STEP is meant to supplement your overall Health and Safety learning, not replace it. It should therefore be used in conjunction with other HSE slip and trip guidance and tools and  your own specific company guidance and policies.

If after accessing STEP, the HSE web pages and consulting the guidance you still have particular slip or trip problems in your workplace, you should contact HSE infoline on 0845 345 0055. Full contact details for infoline

5. What other resources are available on the STEP Tool to help me train others and to better manage slip and trip risks?

There are many additional resources available on STEP;-

There are presentations that can be used to train general workers, cleaning staff and maintenance workers. They all contain speaker's notes. The presentations will take about 20-25 minutes to deliver; you can reduce the delivery time by deleting the case study slides. You can change images within the presentation and include others specific to your premises. However please note whilst there are no copyright issues with STEP we will not allow you to alter any of the text within our slides. You will need WinZip or the equivalent to open these files.

There is an introductory level quiz that will allow you to check your workers understanding of slips and trips following completion of the introductory level course. You will need Adobe Acrobat reader to view these files.

There are several additional Slip and Trip Guidance notes on Cleaning, Flooring, Footwear and general issues. There are specific guidance notes, good practice guides and top tips, for example, to help prevent slips in kitchens.

There are also additional learning tools to supplement STEP e.g. the Slips Assessment Tool (SAT), a slips and trips mapping tool – aid for safety representatives and a slips and trips hazard spotting checklist.

All of these additional resources are available on STEP via Resources

6. Have you any plans to build in markers on the tool to enable Managers to track employee progress/ completion of learning pages and levels on the tool?

The technique you refer to is called ‘scorming’. HSE is considering whether this technique can be incorporated into future versions of STEP.

7. Can we place the STEP tool onto our own organisation's intranet site. We want to incorporate this package into our own Health and Safety Training, briefings, etc?

There is no technical reason why your company couldn't host the package on your own intranet as it is just a series of 'straight' html pages and supporting files, all of which are included on the DVD (STEP – Slips and trips eLearning package).

8. If we put STEP onto our company’s Intranet can we tailor the package to suit our organisation?

No, HSE does not allow anyone to modify the STEP package but you can download it onto your system.

9. Whilst we found the General Course useful we would find a specific sector one more helpful, does HSE have any plans to include additional sectors on the STEP tool?

HSE is considering how to update the tool in future. HSE focused initially on developing courses for the four sectors where slips and trips are most prevalent, in addition to a ‘general’ course which suits most organisations.
