Dear Sir

You are quite wrong to imply any involvement of the Health and Safety Executive in the cancellation of the St George’s Day breakfast at Bronham, Wiltshire (Comment, 24 April).

We have no interest in making people extensively risk averse. Conversely, we remain very concerned by the level of injury at work (including 220 deaths and 30,000 serious injuries in 2004/05).  Our staff are engaged full time, with employers and trade unionists, in trying to reduce these in order to prevent as far as possible the human misery they cause. We make no apology for this.

Yours faithfully

GEOFFREY PODGER
CHIEF EXECUTIVE
