Better Backs campaign

The Better Backs Campaign finished on 31 March 2008. A big thank you to all those who actively participated in the campaign. It has run over the last three years and resulted in an increasing awareness of how to tackle back pain and upper limb disorder at work. HSE now wants to learn from the evaluation of the work we have done in this period.

In the meantime HSE is focussing on the prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD).

Better Backs aimed to reduce the:

  • incidence of back pain and upper limb disorders (ULDs) caused or made worse by work;
  • impact of back pain and ULDs;
  • number of working days lost due to back pain and ULDs.

We encouraged employers and workers to work together to help people return to normal activities, including work. We also continued to promote the importance of managing back pain more generally by “staying active” and good return to work practices. We were keen to see the continuing involvement of businesses, professional bodies, trade unions and employees’ representatives, trade associations and the voluntary sector in Better Backs.

If you want to continue to help spread the message on better backs the campaign materials are still available via the past campaign materials link above.

A dedicated page for Upper Limb Disorders (ULDs) is currently under construction.
