Legislative changes to GSMR

On 9 March 2023, the Gas Safety (Management) (Amendment) Regulations 2023 were laid before Parliament amending the Gas Safety Management Regulations 1996 (GSMR).

GSMR still applies and continues to provide the regulatory framework for gas transmission and distribution. The amendments make changes to the requirements for the content and characteristics of gas that is permitted to be conveyed in gas networks in Great Britain.

The amendments also make changes to the way in which the service for reporting gas leaks is provided. In future this service will be provided by dutyholders with a specific safety case which has been approved by HSE.

The definition of a gas network in GSMR 1996 has also been updated and co-operation duties are clarified.
