Machine-assisted takedown

What you need to know

Many incidents have occurred where operators use machines to assist in the takedown of large edge trees and hung-up or leaning trees.

These case studies show what happens when felling and takedown operators do not follow good practice guidance.

What you need to do

AFAG have produced guidance for the industry in suitable methods to use machinery for takedown, based on using skidders and hand winches. They use recommendations from recent research to update their guidance.

All operators must receive appropriate training in:

  • How to operate the machine
  • How to do the tasks required
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • How to keep the machine in good working order.
