Mapping Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Professional Body Activities in Scotland

This report was commissioned by the Partnership on Health and Safety in Scotland - a body set up by the Health and Safety Commission as a forum for key stakeholders in workplace health and safety in Scotland, including the Scottish Executive.

The purpose of the report is to:

  • Provide guidance, in particular, for small and medium-sized businesses on where they can go for competent advice and how to select what advice is needed;
  • Provide a source of reference material for regulators, service providers and professionals to sign- post potential clients;
  • Encourage and support professionals from related disciplines to broaden their range of skills and qualifications for application in the world of work;
  • Provoke and generate a debate about Scotland's occupational safety and health professions: where capacity might need building; and in what direction it should develop to support the agenda on what makes "good work".

Anecdotally, there is a belief that competent occupational safety and health resources are underused and/or ignored by some Scottish business, academia and public bodies.

The report is underpinned by data on members of professional bodies in each category and discipline to allow an initial assessment of current and future demand for services against capacity.  Such an assessment will inform decisions about how to develop and expand the professional services needed for Scotland's future success, as well as defining a new model for sharing that responsibility across private, public and voluntary sectors.
