Health and Safety Executive

Site visits

Estates Excellence aims to provide businesses with the right knowledge to improve their health and safety management systems. We want to ensure that you are not wasting time and resources on risks that are not relevant for your business.

By spending between 60 - 90 minutes on your site, we hope to direct you to information about the relevant risks. We will tailor the visit – smaller businesses will have shorter visits. Before we visit, we will visit you to get further information about your business.

What to expect during a visit

We will:

  • Walk around: spend a few minutes walking round your workplace to gain an understanding of your business and its risks.
  • Questionnaire: help you fill in a self-assessment questionnaire (EE KIT tool) that covers both knowledge and standards.
  • Identify risks: agree key risks that are most relevant to your business and help you identify:
    • what you know about the topic;
    • what you’ve done to address any issues; and
    • what else you need.
  • Information pack: give you a free information & guidance pack and links to further information
  • Training events: invite you to attend free training events held locally.
  • Occupational Health Surveillance: we may offer free health surveillance to some of your employees

The reason for the visit is to help you manage your risks. If we find a serious risk during your Estates Excellence visit we will ask you to voluntarily stop or change your practices and then carry on with the visit. Of course, if you refuse to stop the work and or make changes, our Estates Excellence Officer has the option of calling in an Inspector to resolve the issue with you and they could require you to stop and make changes.
