HSE Starter Pack

If you’ve recently set up in business or are new to health and safety, our Starter Pack is for you. We have designed it to provide a comprehensive and low cost introduction to health and safety for new and small businesses.

The pack contains most of the basic health and safety advice you need to help you comply with the law and protect your workers. It also includes copies of the HSE Accident Book and the Health and Safety Law Poster, which must be displayed in business premises, by law.

HSE Campaigns

HSE runs regular campaigns to raise awareness of health and safety issues.

Recent campaigns include:

Fit Out, 2005: National inspections looked at the issues of low falls and good order at construction projects that are approaching completion.

Good order initiative, 2006: Continuing the work of Fit Out Inspectors looked at good order issues on construction sites and how effectively these were being managed. The overall aim of the Initiative was to reduce trip injuries on site.

Safe start, 2006: Occupational health and safety of young people.

Better backs, 2007: Increased awareness of how to tackle back pain and upper limb disorder at work

Falls from vehicles, 2007: Promoted good practice to prevent falls from vehicles

Lighten the load, 2007: European Week campaign dedicated to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)

Ladder exchange, 2008:  If a contractor had a ladder which was bent, broken or battered they could part exchange it for a new one with a discount of up to 50%.

Developing property, 2009 Targeting property developers with the aim of increasing their awareness of their responsibilities as construction clients under the Construction Design Management Regulations 2007.

Shattered lives, 2009: Preventing slips, trips and falls in the workplace

Asbestos: The hidden killer, 2009: Raising awareness amongst tradesmen that they are at risk from exposure to asbestos.

European Campaign on Risk Assessment: A two-year campaign focussing on risk assessment, aimed at employers, workers, safety representatives and other stakeholders.

Tools

CHaSPI Corporate Health and Safety Performance Index (CHaSPI) is a web-based tool to assist large organisations (both public and private) with over 250 employees to:
measure the effectiveness of their internal control of health and safety benchmark their performance against their own targets and the performance of their peers.

SME Performance Indicator: For businesses with fewer than 250 employees, we have developed the SME Performance Indicator with Business Link and the British Insurance Brokers' Association. This self-assessment tool:

  • helps you to understand how well you identify and manage health and safety hazards
  • provides you with targeted guidance to help you improve your management of health and safety
  • enables you to compare your performance anonymously with other businesses across sectors and sizes.

Manual handling assessment chart (MAC): You can use this tool to assess the risks posed by lifting, carrying and team manual handling activities.
